⚡ 7 Clear Signs You May Need a New Consumer Unit

By LC Fisher Electrical Services — Your Local NICEIC Registered Electrician, Nottingham

📌 What Is a Consumer Unit?

Your consumer unit — often still called a "fuse box" — is the heart of your home's electrical system. It distributes power around your house and shuts it off if something goes wrong. Modern units include RCBOs and an SPD (surge protection device) to keep you, your family, and your appliances safe.

🔴 7 Signs It Might Need Replacing

1. It's an old-style fuse box with wooden or ceramic fuses

If your unit has wire or rewirable fuses rather than modern switches, it's well past its best. These offer very little protection and can be difficult to replace safely.

2. It's showing visible signs of age

Look out for:

• 🟤 Discoloured, scorched, or melting plastic

• 🟡 Cracks in the casing

• 🔧 Loose switches that don't click firmly

• 💨 Buzzing or crackling sounds — get this checked promptly

3. Trips keep happening — and not just once in a while

Occasional tripping is normal. But if breakers trip every time you use certain appliances, or won't stay reset at all, your unit may not be functioning correctly anymore.

4. Your EICR report says so

If your last Electrical Installation Condition Report came back with a C1 or C2 recommendation on your consumer unit — don't ignore it. This means it's unsafe or potentially dangerous and should be replaced urgently.

5. You don't have full RCD or RCBO protection

Older units often only protect against overheating, not electric shock. Modern units use RCBOs — individual protection for every circuit. If you don't see the "T" test button on each switch, your unit is outdated.

6. You've had an extension, new kitchen, or extra sockets added

Adding more circuits to an old unit often means messy wiring or overloaded boards. A new consumer unit is designed to handle exactly what your home needs today.

7. It's made of brown plastic — the well-known "Hager" style

Many older brown plastic consumer units are now recognised as a fire risk. Even if it seems to be working fine, insurers may refuse cover or insist on replacement. It's not worth the risk.
