🧡 Mental Health in Construction — For Nottingham’s Electricians & Self-Employed Trades

📌 Introduction

The construction industry — and electrical work in particular — is tough. Not just physically, but mentally too. Whether you're a self-employed electrician here in Nottingham or working anywhere across the UK, the pressures can pile up quietly, until they feel overwhelming. And too often, because we're "tradespeople" — because we're used to fixing things — we feel like we should be able to fix our own mental health too.

You don't have to.

🧱 Why It Hits Us Harder — The Reality for Electricians

Being your own boss comes with unique pressures:

• 📅 Feast or famine work — one week you're working 12-hour days, the next wondering where the next job is coming from

• 📋 It's not just wiring — quotes, invoices, chasing payments, tax returns, insurance — the admin never stops

• ⏱️ Deadlines & expectations — clients want it yesterday, delays cost money, and you're the one everyone looks to for answers

• 🚗 Long days alone — travelling from job to job, working solo, less human connection than you might realise

• 🤫 The "tough it out" culture — generations of conditioning: "don't complain, just get on with it"

💡 The stats are sobering: Construction workers have among the highest suicide rates of any UK industry. Men in the sector are 3x more likely to take their own life than the general male population. This isn't "just how it is" — it's a crisis we can help change.

🔌 The Signs — In Yourself & Others

We spot loose connections and overheating wiring on a daily basis. But spotting the warning signs in ourselves or our mates? That's harder. Look out for:

🚩 In yourself 🤝 In a mate

😔 Irritability, snapping at people at home 🤐 Suddenly withdrawing — not replying to messages

😴 Sleeping too much or not at all 🍺 Increased drinking — "just to unwind" every night

📍 Everything feels like an effort — even jobs you usually enjoy 🗣️ Joking constantly about being skint or stressed — but meaning it

🤯 Constant worry — replaying conversations, worrying about money 🚫 Turning down work or cancelling jobs last minute

🍺 Reaching for a drink just to quiet the mind 😐 "I'm fine" — said quickly, with no eye contact

⚠️ Just like electrical arcing — the warning signs are often there before the "fire" starts. Don't ignore them.

🛠️ What Helps — Practical Steps

✅ 1. It's Okay Not to Be Okay

This is the hardest step. Your worth is not measured by how busy you are or how much you earn. Being self-employed doesn't mean being superhuman. You're allowed bad days, bad weeks, and doubts about whether it's all worth it. That's human — not weakness.

✅ 2. Talk to Someone — Anyone

You don't need a full therapy session. Just find one person — a mate, a partner, another electrician — and say:

"To be honest, I'm struggling a bit right now."

Half the battle is breaking the silence. You'll be amazed how many others are thinking exactly the same thing but didn't know how to say it.

✅ 3. Set Boundaries — Your Business Won't Collapse

• ⏰ You don't need to answer messages at 9pm

• 📅 It's okay to say no to a job if you're already at capacity

• 🛑 Take your lunch break — away from the van and the job

• 📉 Slow periods are normal — they don't mean you're failing

✅ 4. Look After the Basics

Sleep, food, movement — boring advice, but they're your foundation. When we're stressed, these are usually the first things to go. Protect them like you'd protect your tools.

💬 A Final Thought

"We fix homes, offices, businesses every day. But the most important thing you can ever look after is yourself — because you matter more than any job, any quote, or any deadline."

If you're reading this and you're struggling right now — please reach out. There is no shame in asking for help. Just like a loose connection needs attention, so do you. And just like a good electrician calls in a second opinion when needed — so should you.

🧡 If you're doing okay — pass this on. Send it to that mate who's been a bit quiet lately. Ask them how they really are. The strongest thing we can do for each other is simply ask and listen.
